Greetings from Haiti,
Today was unlike anything we had planned. At first, you may think it was a bad day, but let me tell you how we spent our day ... and how it turned out in the end.
It really started last night, during our more than four-hour ride home (the distance should have only taken less than an hour), when our van started to make noises. It got worse throughout the drive. So this morning the van went in to the shop (had to have the bearings replaced). It was supposed to be back by noon but it actually came back at 7:30 pm.
Also, the pump broke yesterday that transports water to the tanks on the roof here at the Guest House, so we've been without running water since then. The internet has not been working since our arrival (thankfully I have a Blackberry). We were without electricity for a major portion of the day as well. So, you could say we were stranded here without water, electricity or internet.
And it would be true. But we actually had a wonderful day here. We were able to develop story boards and daily plans for our remaining days in Haiti. It was great to be relaxed, and to enjoy unhurried and creative time to work as a team. We have a lot of video projects to organize as we gear up for recruiting and training of 2011 Haiti teams and also prepare to promote opportunities for long-term church partnerships, water projects, new communities and more.
Some of the great joys for us on this trip have been spending time with pastors who are encouraged, meeting new believers, and visiting locations where there has been so much progress. We were able to review and catalog the video of these amazing experiences during the day today.
And now, for the rest of today's story. Once our computer batteries died (remember...we didn't have electricity for a portion of the day?), we did enjoy a little free time. Two of our guys were able to film for a short adventure about a Haitian lizard. Yes, it may not make it into theaters, but a film it shall be!
I was able to finish an outstanding book (and one I highly recommend) by John Ortberg called "The me I Want to Be."
We were also able to start plans for a special January 12th event - the one-year anniversary of the earthquake. I was here in Haiti, along videographer Dave Proehl, only 12 days after the earthquake meeting with Haitian church leaders and documenting both the damage and the plans for rebuilding. I am so excited to show you the changes over the 10 months since the earthquake. It may seem slow by some standards, but one Haitian pastor said yesterday that with the help of the American church and short-term mission teams, they have been able to complete things "that would have taken 10, 20 or even 30 years to accomplish."
One very cool story is about the church in Value. We'll be leaving tomorrow at 6 am to go there. It is a rural church almost 7 km up from a main highway. The earthquake damage left the church unusable. But tomorrow, the pastor will actually be getting married INSIDE the church which is now fully restored!
One last thing tonight. On January 12th, we will host a live event that will be broadcast to the internet. During that program, there will be stories and videos. We will have worship, a special appearance by The Neverclaim, and we will pray for Haiti and for the wonderful work being done by our Missions Door partners and the 15 teams we have sent to Haiti so far. More information will be posted about this event once we are back in the States.
We thank you again for your thoughts and prayers. We still have many projects and towns to visit. And that means many more interviews with key contacts here.
All in all, today turned out to be a great day! I'll write more at the end of Thursday.
